Chinese Opera: Mask

read a book called "解讀繽紛的色彩世界" by 張明
it's about how colors relate to the enivornment, culture and human
some of them are quite interesting

for example there's a chapter talking about the mask of chinese opera

the makeup is a combination between reality and symbolism
it presents the type, characteristics, status, age, etc. of the character in a exaggerated way
the following are some examples:

1. Purple: clarm, honest, determined

2. Red: brave, strong, loyal

3. White: sinister, deceiful

3. Blue: Strong, boorish, brave, rebel

5. Black: tough, brave, bluff, rash, justice

6. Green: brave, tyrannical, hot-tempered, violent

7. Yellow: fierce, cruel, insidious

8. Grey: elderly

9. Gold/Silver: god/ghost/Buddha

More examples:

However, the above are just some examples. The use of colors is very flexible and sometimes the colors may used to present different meanings.
